Costly Misstep

One of the articles that caught my attention was this particular piece by Darul Ehsan Today which I mostly concur with, although I admit I don't know who are these advisors and strategists that charted BN's GE13 campaign.

Apparently the article was taken from Malaysian Insider, but I don't read that thing, so I got it second hand from DET instead :D.

I do agree with the two major missteps by DS Najib's campaign build up towards the GE13, though.

DS Najib's approach of focusing on his own personal popularity as a build up towards GE13 was a mistake.

As was rightly pointed out by the article, quoting Tun Daim, Malaysian elections is not a presidential election.

Hence, pitting Najib's popularity against Anwar's is not the answer.  Neither is pitting BN's performance against PKR's as the real power behind Pakatan has always been DAP among the Chinese and PAS among the Malays.

All political analysts would have already identified this a long while back, and that should have been the basis of BN's campaign, but BN failed to capitalise on this knowledge in addressing the relentless anti-Umno stance by Pakatan propaganda machinery (Malaysiakini, Malaysian Insider, Free Malaysia Today, The Star, etc.) and the vernacular Chinese media (Sin Chew, China Press, Oriental Daily, etc.).

Instead, BN's campaign has been on Najib's personal popularity, that brought the focus on PM and his wife, as opposed to BN's successes in Johor, Sarawak and Sabah against DAP's in Penang, PKR's in Selangor, even PAS' in Kelantan.

Then there is the perception of Najib's predilection towards favoring the Chinese community over and above others, that had been translated by the Malays as marginalising them and their interests in order to gain favor from the Chinese.

In some parts of Johor, for example, I have personally heard complaints among the grassroots members that not only are the Malays being neglected by their Chinese and Indian representatives, they feel that Najib is marginalising the Malays too.

Such was the strength of the Johor Malay anger that BN lost in Parit Yaani and won with a much reduced majority in Pemanis.

I was told that for Johor at least, the simulation that was made in 2011 by BN Johor was reflected exactly on the evening of May 5th.

Four marginal parliamentary seats that was dependent on plus or minus two percent swing votes of undecided voters was Labis, Tanjong Piai, Segamat and Batu Pahat, where winnable candidates would have made the difference.

However, against BN Johor's advice, KL decided to field Puad Zarkashi in Batu Pahat, resulting in BN's marginal loss at a seat where BN should have won, albeit with a reduced majority.

It was a show of arrogance by the KL people who felt that they knew better than the Johoreans working on the ground.

Najib definitely needs better strategists for the next GE, and he must get it now.

    1. Of course I am blaming the majority of the Chinese first, then I am blaming Najib and his strategists for neglecting the Malays and pandering to Chinese interests when the signs were clear that urban Chinese were giving all their support to DAP despite acknowledging that it was MCA who had been serving them even in areas where MCA hardly ever won.

It was clear that urban Chinese in Selangor and KL never appreciated MCA's service and the unflagging attention BN gave them, and this attitude had spread to the rest of the country.

If it worked for years in the urban centres of KL, Penang and Selangor, why wouldn't it work in Johor, Negeri Sembilan and Melaka too, right?

Umno must learn this very important lesson, to never give too much face to Chinese NGOs and associations, because apparently giving them face have made them arrogant and forgetful of their humbler beginnings and the eastern values that was part of the Chinese cultural identity which now they seemed to have lost.

    3. UMNO Malay Power29 May 2013 at 00:11

Najib is no different from previous UMNO Presidents. For selfish and personal reasons they prefer to cultivate the Chinese because firstly, they dont understand the chinese, Najib thought he is being accepted as a leader by the Chinese due to his charisma, due to his smile, his son speaking mandarin, he giving millions to chinese schools.
Why do UMNO President like to believe that the Chinese like them? (which is obviously not true to everyone else)? Because all these while, the Malays had formed UMNO and supported UmNO to fight for the Malays. But the sons of former UMNO leaders never had to fight the chinese communists. Never had to go to war against the Bintang Tiga. Never face down Chin Peng. So they dont understand the power that they have is Malay power. Mahathir was obviously lost in his self perception. He was not great. It was UMNO which allow him to self agrandiosment as Nazri once said. The Malays thought UMNO presidents have done all they could to help the Malays, Mahathir even insulting the Malays as dependence on subsidies, crutches etc such was his lack of understanding of the situation.

Many right thinking malays thought that was the situation until the information culture proved Mahathir lies. The Chinese and Indians were the one depending on diesel subisdies to become millionaires. Taking petronas money through their factories, suv and their constant travel. While malays are small receivers of subsidies.

In fact all those listed in the Forbes billionaires list must be investigated by SPRM for corruption because it is impossible to gain so much money in so little time during Mahathir rule without illegal practice like dircet tenders, giving of Airasia for RM1 etc, UMNO Presidents sons, menantus stakes in chinese companies.

It is a humiliation for Najib and UMNO lost supreme councils to find out that it is the Malays who put them in power. The Chinese want power for themselves.

Now it is up to you, up to us the Malays to galvanise Malay Power for our race benefits. To do this Malays must take interests to change UMNO leadership from self serving businessmen to patriots. It is so easy to gain power in UMNO as KJ prove. Just buy 35 people over. The Malays must never let corrupt people like KJ run UMNO, you can hear his chinese whining for after all where did he got his wealth if not from the Chinese?

  2. That's part of the interview China Press did with Tun Daim Zainuddin. Read the full interview here:
    http://kadirjasin.blogspot.com/2013/05/incorrect-strategy-cost-bn-votes.html

Daim hit the nail on the head again and again. We can just pray that Najib bypasses his advisors and read the damned interview. (Daim says all of Najib's advisors should be sacked).

  3. "Najib definitely needs better strategists for the next GE, and he must get it now."

Judging by the noises Najib is making right now, he won't need any advisors pretty soon, cos he'll be kicked out. Najib still hasn't learned his lesson, still want to go on the hura-hura stage parties that misled his estimations in GE13, still wanting to devote his resources to winning over the wrong segments.

    I can't say I will miss Najib.

Don't blame the strategist lah. Blame the man himself. Like the Chinese who bet against the government, Najib made the bet that his presidential-like leadership will have the voters' support.

Obviously he has failed. Time has come for UMNO delegates to get rid of Najib.

  9. Hindsight is 20/20.

Anyway, Helen Ang's blog have already predicted MCA's failure and the extent of DAP's successful propaganda and indoctrination way earlier and way more persistent.
Well, she also seems like she has a rage within and possibly a grudge against The Star but even that seems to be more truth to what she says as well. There's a problem when The Star, an MCA affiliated media is perceived to do more for DAP than for BN.

  12. Mahathir made the strongest hint to date when he said last week at a conference that Najib will continue to be leader "because there is no other alternative". Read between the old man's lines. He is asking for an alternative, and so far no one has the guts to put up his hand.

Is this a case of "amongst the blind, the one-eyed man is king" ?
