Lee Kuan Yew is seriously ill

Just heard that former Singapore premier Lee Kuan Yew is seriously ill.

The 89-year old was said to be suffering from serious urinary problems and other complications.

It was said that Lee had been suffering several bouts of serious illness over the past months but his current health problem seems to be the worst.

It was however not yet known whether the Istana or Lee's family will make any public announcement soon on the condition of the former long serving leader.

Sources in Singapore said Lee's health had actually started to deteriorate after the death of his wife Madam Kwa Geok Chew two years ago at the age of 89.

The couple must be true soulmates.

Despite the news blackout on Lee's current condition, it was learnt that preparations are being made in the event the long time patriach of Singapore could not recover from his ailment.

Personally, I hope Lee will recover. The Malaysia-Singapore love-hate relations would never be the same again without him around.

  1. Not true. When it's your time to go, you should go. Singapore should move ahead without the clout of LKY. Similarly, Malaysia should move ahead without the clout of Mahathir.

We are a paternalistic society, and we frequently live under the clout of older generation with past thinking. The sooner the older generation leaders go, the better.

Look at the US, their leaders keep moving from one generation to another. Bush Sr was born in 30's, Clinton in 40's, Bush Jr in 50's, now Obama in 60's. Similarly in the UK, Tony Blair became PM when he was in early 40's, similar to David Cameron.

  2. Gen-X/Y hybrid, `paternalistic society' is not about `older generation'. Go back read some more books or just google for the meaning of paternalistic...:)

    Maternalistic family

    1. I think he meant 'dictatorial'. He has a point though.

Don't get hung up over definition. Nobody has any authority over anybody on any definition. A lot of politicians got away with out-of-context argument by arguing about definitions. Especially BN's politicians.

    2. Wrong.

      "paternalism |pəˈtərnlˌizəm|
      noun
the policy or practice on the part of people in positions of authority of restricting the freedom and responsibilities of those subordinate to them in the subordinates' supposed best interest"

It is the older generation that holds up this outdated world view. That is not to say that there are no young people who do not subscribe to such views, but rather, it holds less sway. There is a co-relation between generational differences and individualism over communalism.

Yes yes you might perch yourself on a false dais of self-aggrandisement simply because you "have read some more books or googled the meaning of paternalism" but I'm doing my masters in political science and dare say that's worth more than "some books and google"

LKY has incarcerated many of his opponents under ISA for years. He has destroyed families with the detention. I hope that his children and grandchildren will have to be reminded what their father/grandfather did. It's a SHAME.

  14. That is the reality of the living, death will justify the end of one's legacy in these World.

Toon Kutty hasn't realize it yet, because of busily prodding his son fortune into he future. What a sicko son he had, that needs a crutch from the father. Surely all of his sibling are not worth a pinch of their salt at all.

Don't expect anyone of them to become a follower what for more to be a good leader, if they are ever will be one. No, Not at all.
